Indian Premier League, 2018

Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Rajasthan Royals

The Big Picture

The 11th edition of the Indian Premier League has got off to a riveting start with a plethora of matches going down the wire, and it is expected to offer much the same as a buoyed RCB unit fresh from a win against KXIP will take on Rajasthan Royals, who are coming off a morale-boosting win in a rain-marred game against the Delhi Daredevils.

Where: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

When: 15 April 2018, 4:00 PM

Pitch Conditions:

With short boundaries and high altitudes, the pitch at the Chinnaswamy Stadium has proved to be a heaven for the batsman, especially in white-ball cricket. However, with the pitch getting relaid in 2016, the past two seasons have witnessed the track to be sluggish, making stroke-play difficult, reminiscent of the disastrous campaign RCB endured last year.

Statistics over the years:

While over the past decade, the average first innings score has ranged from 156 to 140.62 in 2017, a sharp dip as compared to the 2016 season, where average first innings total was 192. 40.2% of the matches have been won by the team batting first (35) while teams batting second have won 54% of the matches (47), four matches have ended as N/R.

Team Preview and Probable XI

Royal Challengers Bangalore

On the back of a belligerent start by Baz Brendon McCullum (43 off 27 balls), and a superb partnership between AB de Villiers (44 off 23 balls) and Virat Kohli (31 off 33 balls), it seemed that RCB had finally put the ghosts of their dreaded campaign last year to bed, Nitish Rana’s double-wicket break, in which he accounted for Kohli and de Villers in successive balls, the reality came crashing down. While Mandeep Singh played a valiant cameo (37 off 18 balls), RCB’s weakness of a lack of finisher lower down the order was exposed to the hilt.

But the match against KXIP saw a much-improved performance from RCB, particularly from their bowlers spearheaded by Umesh Yadav, as they became the first bowling unit to bowl out a side in this years IPL. While there is a lot to be desired when it comes to their lower-order batting, RCB might repace Manan Vohra with Sarfaraz Khan, who has been out-of-touch thus far in the tournament.

Probable XI:

Quinton de Kock (wk), Brendon McCullum, Virat Kohli (C), AB de Villiers, Sarfaraz Khan/Manan Vohra, Mandeep Singh, Washington Sundar, Chris Woakes, Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav, Kulwant Khejroliya

Rajasthan Royals

The Rajasthan Royals had an abysmal start to their 2018 IPL campaign as they went down to the 2016 IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad by nine-wickets.

The second match against the Delhi Daredevils saw a much-improved performance from Rajasthan. While the likes of Rahane, Samson, and Buttler fared well with the bat, it was their fast bowlers, who displayed exemplary control and a plethora of skills to restrict the Delhi batsmen well below the desired target of 71 in six overs (D/L).

While not much changes are expected in the Rajasthan line-up, Ish Sodhi might get a look-in, who is coming off as a replacement of injured Zahir Khan.

Probable XI:

Rahul Tripathi, Ajinkya Rahane (capt), D’Archy Short, Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler (wk), Ben Stokes, S.Gopal, K Gowtham, Ben Laughlin, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jaydev Unadkat

Indian Premier League, 2018

Kings XI Punjab vs Chennai Super Kings

The Big Picture

So, here we are! After weeks of anticipation, analysis, and euphoria, the Indian Premier League is finally here. The 2018 season with all the subtle additions like DRS, Mid-season Transfer, is expected to be bigger and better.

On Sunday night, the Kings return to Mohali where they host the Chennai Super Kings, and it is expected to be a high voltage clash.

Where: P.C.A Stadium, Mohali

When: 15 April 2018, 8:00 PM

Pitch Conditions

The pitch at Mohali over the years has provided a riveting contest between the bat and the ball. Teams batting first have won 37.7 percent of the games whereas teams batting second have won 60.7 percent of games in the last ten years in T20s.

Team News and Probabale XI:

Chennai Super Kings

The Super Kings would believe that they got out of the jail, thanks to the heroics of all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in their tournament opener against the defending champions Mumbai Indians. At 6-84, while chasing 165, they looked well and truly out of the contest, only to be saved by a belligerent Bravo, who smashed 68 off just 30 balls to cap off a sensational win for CSK.

While Shane Watson fared well with both bat and ball (2-29 & 16 off 14 balls), it is their middle-order in Raina, Dhoni, and Rayudu, who threw away his wicket after a fine start, that will need to step-up in the upcoming games. Kedar Jadhav, who hit the winning shot in the last over, has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury, he had sustained in the last encounter.

The men in Yellow were involved in yet another nail-biting thriller against the Kolkata Knight Riders, where late heroics from Sam Billings led his side to an astounding run-chase. While Chennai has won two matches in a row, they need to address their death bowling issues against Kings XI Punjab, on Sunday.

Suresh Raina is ruled out due to injury and Murli Vijay is expected to make his comeback tomorrow.

Probable XI:

Murali Vijay, Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (C & WK), Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Imran Tahir,  Karn Sharma/Harbhajan Singh, Deepak Chahar, Lungi Ngidi/Mark Wood

Kings XI Punjab

The Kings XI Punjab have been the perennial under-achievers in the IPL. They started well in 2008 where they made it into the top four and then another brilliant one in 2014, where they entered the finals for the very first time under George Bailey’s leadership.

They were going pretty well against the RCB as well before a rampaging Umesh Yadav scalped three wickets in an over to derail the momentum of their innings, from which they could never recover.

On Sunday night, the Kings return to Mohali where they host the Chennai Super Kings, and it is expected to be a high voltage clash. While not much changes are expected, Mohit Sharma, who has been pretty expensive thus far, might make way for Barinder Sran.

Probable XI:

Aaron Finch, Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul (WK),  Yuvraj Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, R Ashwin (C), Mohit Sharma, Mohit Sharma/Barinder Sran,  Andrew Tye
