Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians
The Big Picture
After a week-long break, The Kings XI Punjab move to their adopted home in Indore, where they will take on the defending champions, Mumbai Indians.
Having won four games on the bounce, KXIP’s winning streak came to a screeching halt against SRH when they failed to chase down 133 last week. However, with eight points in five matches, KXIP have played admirably thus far in the tournament. The combo of Gayle and Rahul (368) providing them blistering starts, but their middle-order barring Karun Nair has been their cause of concern. An out-of-form Yuvraj Singh was ousted in the previous game against SRH in favor of Manoj Tiwary and similar predicament might ensue in case of Aaron Finch, who has been in horrendous form this season, having accumulated just 24 runs in six matches and Marcus Stoinis might fill-in for his Aussie compatriot. The bowling department looks sorted with Ankit Rajpoot (5-14 against SRH) and Mujeeb in outstanding form.
KXIP have very few reasons to worry as compared to their opponents, the Mumbai Indians, whose campaign is on a knife-edge and even a small blip might end their dreams of retaining their title this year. Two things have hindered Mumbai this season, their top-order and bowling at the death. While Suryakumar Yadav (283 runs in eight matches) have been the bedrock of their top-order, the likes of Lewis and Kishan have been very inconsistent. Rohit Sharma has played two match-winning knocks but it is highly debatable whether he is batting too low in the order. The middle-order in Pollard (76 runs in six innings), Hardik and Krunal Pandya have struggled to up the ante in the death overs. Hardik despite scoring a fifty in the last match looked out of touch and have not been able to close out games in the tournament thus far.
With the ball, they have been guilty of giving away too many runs in the Powerplay overs. Left-arm pacers Mustafizur Rahaman (7 wickets) and Mitchell McClenaghan (9 wickets) have been largely expensive especially at the death at an economy of 8.34 and 8.66 respectively.
Where: Holkar Stadium, Indore
When: 4 May 2018, 8:00 PM
The wicket at the Holar Stadium is usually a batting paradise testified by Virender Sehwag’s 219 (then highest ODI score) against West Indies in 2011 Kohli’s double-hundred in the venue’s Test debut against England in 2016.
Statistics over the years: While over the past seven years, the average first innings score has gone from 137.5 to 169.6, the team batting second has a 100% success rate.
